5 Questions to Ask Any Odoo Partner Before You Sign
Why Twenty Years Beats a Sales Pitch
Odoo ranks partners by tier, and tier measures how many projects someone has logged, not whether they understand your industry. A high volume shop can run eighty implementations and still be running the same shallow playbook on project eighty one, and Odoo’s own partner managers will tell you privately that volume like that tends to come with a reputation problem rather than a quality one. We came into Odoo already carrying twenty plus years in manufacturing and distribution, so what gets called best practice is really just someone else’s mistakes from a decade ago, made by people who aren’t making them on your project. Offshore teams built around ticket volume run into the same wall, since cheap hours don’t substitute for having sat across the table from a plant manager before.
What Separates a Good Partner From a Cheap One
The lowest quote is rarely the best value. A good partner asks about your actual workflow before proposing anything, not just your budget, and that includes the accounting side, which is usually the least understood and most consequential part of any ERP project. We keep a CPA on staff for exactly that reason, so accounting treatment gets considered from the first design session instead of getting bolted on after something breaks. The other piece is efficiency, getting you through the process in as few clicks and as little wasted time as possible, because dragging things out isn’t thoroughness, it’s just being slow.
Buying Direct from Odoo
Odoo also sells implementation directly, in fixed blocks of hours, 50, 100 200, running roughly $7,000 to $25,000 depending on scope. Worth knowing what that team is built to deliver before you sign up for it. Odoo publishes its own internal methodology for training these consultants, and it says plainly that customer satisfaction during implementation is not a priority, that custom development is something to minimize, and that consultants are trained to push back on anything that doesn’t fit the standard build rather than adapt the build to your business. Odoo’s own head of project leaders has said most of the people running these projects are fresh out of college, hired for mindset over experience, because in her words, “experience is overrated.” That’s not us reading between the lines, it’s written into their own training material. It works fine if your business already runs close to Odoo’s default workflows. It works against you if the reason your shop has stayed profitable for twenty years is the parts that don’t.
What Five Minutes on Their Website Gets You
Odoo’s pricing page has a built-in project estimator. Pick your company size, check the app bundles you think you need, and it hands you a dollar figure and an hours package on the spot. Nobody’s asked what your bill of materials looks like, whether you run make to order or make to stock, or what’s actually breaking in your current process. That’s not a knock on the tool, it does exactly what it’s built to do. It’s a reminder that the number on the screen was never about your business, it was about which boxes you checked.
What a Partner Does (the obvious)
An implementation partner configures Odoo for your business, migrates your data, trains your team, and stays on after go-live for support. That part is the same pitch you’ll hear from every partner on the list, since it describes the job, not the person doing it. What determines whether any of that fits how your shop runs is everything that happens before a single screen gets configured, which is the part most partners skip.
Red Flags From a Bad Prior Implementation
If you’ve been burned before, the signs are usually the same. A partner who quotes a price before understanding your process, a rushed go-live with no real training, a team that disappears once the invoice clears. None of that is unique to Odoo, it’s what happens with any rushed implementation regardless of the software underneath it.
