If you’re not a Fortune 1000 manufacturer or distributor, Odoo is probably the better fit. It’s not a patchwork of add ons, it’s one connected system, so when you buy in you get access to all 80 plus apps on the platform. CRM ties to sales, sales ties to inventory, inventory ties to warehousing, warehousing ties to manufacturing, and manufacturing ties to accounting, all pulling from the same database instead of syncing between separate tools. NetSuite is a capable platform, but it’s built and priced for a different scale of operation. For a small or mid-size manufacturer, Odoo gets you that same connected functionality without the enterprise price tag or the year long implementation.
Where NetSuite Comes Up Short.
NetSuite isn’t a bad platform, it’s just built for a bigger problem than most small and mid-size manufacturers actually have. The cost runs higher both to license and to implement, and customization tends to take longer and cost more once you’re inside it. It’s also not as fully built out of the box as Odoo. Something like lot control, which most manufacturers need for quality and traceability, often means buying an add-on module or pulling in a third party app rather than getting it standard. To be fair, that cuts both ways, Odoo covers more ground out of the box, but individual features can be less deep than NetSuite’s once you’re operating at real scale. That’s exactly why Odoo works so well for small and mid-size manufacturers and distributors, and why NetSuite starts to make more sense once you’re closer to Fortune 1000 territory.
