Salesforce Security Settings – Where to begin?

Security, sharing. Roles, profiles. Org wide defaults. Implementation after implementation we watch our clients’ eyes glaze over as we try to explain the fundamentals of Salesforce security settings.  “It all starts with the organizational wide defaults” we say, “and based on your public vs. private sharing model, we will determine if the role hierarchy will come into play”.  SAY WHAT? Oh, and we haven’t even’t begun to talk about profiles yet!

It’s one of the most important configuration pieces to a project if your client has any kind of data restrictions, yet unlike most of the other features of Salesforce which are so easy to explain and demonstrate, security and sharing is a far more daunting task.
