Not Sure If Odoo Fits Your Shop?

What Is Odoo? An Honest Look at the ERP Everyone’s Comparing

What Odoo Really Is

Odoo is a full business management suite, not just a CRM and not just accounting software. It covers CRM, sales, accounting, inventory, manufacturing, HR, and more, all built on one open-source platform. That’s the most common point of confusion we see: people encounter the CRM, or the Accounting, or the Website module first and assume that’s all Odoo does. It isn’t. If your team needs sales, books, inventory, and production tracking to actually talk to each other instead of living in five disconnected tools, that’s the problem Odoo is built to solve.

Is It Actually Free?

The Community edition is genuinely free and open source, you can self-host it yourself at no license cost. Most growing businesses end up on the paid Enterprise edition instead, which starts around $35to $70 a month per user and unlocks hosting, support, customization capabilities and the more polished versions of certain apps. We break down the real cost, including the parts nobody advertises up front, on our pricing page.

The Honest Drawbacks

We’d rather tell you this than have you find out the hard way. Odoo’s quality varies a lot by module, some apps are excellent, a few feel bolted on. Implementation quality depends heavily on who sets it up, a rushed or cheap implementation is the single biggest reason people end up unhappy with Odoo, not the software itself. And community edition users are on their own for support, no phone line to call when something breaks.

How It Stacks Up

Two names come up constantly in this conversation. Katana is a lighter suite, strong on MRP and basic Shop Floor, but it doesn’t include Accounting, and if you’re running a warehouse, it’s not really in the same category. PLEX is built from the shop floor up, and for a company running certified production lines, tracking lot genealogy, and answering to strict OEM quality requirements, that’s the backbone you need.  But most people aren’t running a multi-plant automotive supply operation. They’re running a thirty or forty person shop trying to get production and the books talking to each other for the first time.

On third party review sites, Odoo currently sits around a 4.2 out of 5 across more than 1,300 reviews, with the large majority landing positive. That’s public data, worth citing directly rather than just asserting Odoo is good.

P.S. if you found this useful, there are ten more like it on the free tools page.
